Colosseum Arena 2026: Tickets & access to the arena floor

The arena floor is not included in the standard ticket - here you can find out which tickets give you access, what you can expect on the arena floor and why the extra charge is worthwhile for most visitors.

Important: Arena floor not included in the standard ticket

The standard ticket for the Colosseum entitles you to visit levels 1 and 2 - but not to enter the arena floor. A special Full Experience ticket or a guided tour with arena access is required for access to the arena.

🏟
The arena floor

What is the arena floor of the Colosseum?

The arena floor was the central fighting stage of the Colosseum - the place where gladiator fights, animal fights and imperial spectacles took place in front of up to 50,000 spectators. The name arena is derived from the Latin word harena (sand), with which the originally wooden floor was covered to soak up the blood.

The current arena floor is a partial reconstruction made of steel and wood, which was completed in 2023. It covers part of the hypogeum below - the underground labyrinth of tunnels, cages and elevators. From the arena floor, you can look directly onto the spectator stands and down into the open chambers of the underground - a perspective that cannot be experienced with any other ticket.

💡

The arena floor extends over approx. 83 × 48 meters. The reconstruction of 2023 allows visitors to enter this area for the first time in decades. The contingents per day are very limited - early booking is strongly recommended.

Comparison

Standard ticket vs. arena access: what's the difference?

Both ticket options include access to the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. The key difference lies in which areas of the Colosseum itself are accessible.

Range Standard ticket With arena access
Level 1 & 2 (spectator stands)
Exhibitions & information boards
Roman Forum + Palatine Hill
Entering the arena floor
View into the hypogeum (from above)
Super-Sites Forum Romanum
Validity 24 hours 2 days
Official price 18,00 EUR 24,00 EUR

The arena entrance is highly recommended for first-time visitors to the Colosseum. The view of the enormous tiers from the middle of the arena floor is a unique experience - and the only way to experience the Colosseum from the perspective from which it was originally intended.

Frequent confusion

Arena floor vs. subsoil (hypogeum): What is the difference?

Many visitors confuse the arena floor and the underground - but these are two different areas with different access conditions.

🏟
Arena floor
The reconstructed wooden floor on the fighting level of the Colosseum. Stand here where gladiators once fought. 360-degree view of the spectator stands. View down into the hypogeum through the open areas in the floor.
Self-visit possible
🕳
Underground / Hypogeum
The underground network of tunnels, cages and elevators beneath the arena floor. Gladiators and animals awaited here. Narrow corridors, dramatic atmosphere. Access only as part of an official guided tour.
Only accessible with a guide

The Full Experience Ticket with Arena + Underground gives you access to both areas, but includes an approx. one-hour compulsory guided tour of the Hypogeum. If you only want to enter the arena floor, you need the regular Full Experience Arena Ticket or a guided tour with arena access.

Practical tips

What you should know before visiting the arena floor

  • Book early: Arena tickets are among the quickest to sell out. In the high season (April-October), book several weeks in advance.
  • Plan 30 minutes in advance: For tickets with arena access, you must arrive at the entrance 30 minutes before the booked time slot - not just 15 minutes as with the standard ticket.
  • Personalized ticket: All tickets are issued in your name. Please bring valid photo ID for all visitors.
  • No large bags: Maximum bag size 30 × 40 × 15 cm. There is no luggage storage on site.
  • Best time to take photos: Early in the morning (8:30 am opening) for soft light and fewer visitors on the arena floor. Lunchtime is the most crowded.
  • Sturdy shoes: The arena floor and adjacent areas are uneven. Comfortable shoes are important.
  • Length of stay: With an Arena Ticket, the maximum length of stay in the Colosseum is 90 minutes.

For most first-time visitors to the Colosseum: yes. The view from the center of the arena floor onto the enormous tiers is an experience that fundamentally changes the normal Colosseum visit. Especially in combination with a guided tour that conveys the historical context, the arena entrance is the highlight of many trips to Rome. If you already know the Colosseum or are only planning a short visit, you can also get a good impression with the standard ticket.
The current arena floor is a partial reconstruction made of steel and wood, which was completed and opened to visitors in 2023. The original historical floor consisted of wooden planks covered with sand. After the end of the gladiator games in the early Middle Ages, the floor was removed, revealing the hypogeum underneath.
