Colosseum tips 2026: How to make your visit stress-free
Over 7 million people visit the Colosseum every year. If you are well prepared, you can save hours in the queue and experience the wonder of the world in a completely different way.
The best time for your visit
The Colosseum opens daily at 8:30 a.m. - this first admission is by far the quietest time. The large tour groups arrive later. If you arrive on time for opening, you will encounter fewer crowds, more pleasant temperatures and ideal light for photos.
Opening hours 2026 (seasonal)
| Period | Opening | Closure | Last admission |
|---|---|---|---|

| November - February | 8:30 a.m. | 4:30 pm | 3:30 pm |
Closed: The Colosseum closes every year on January 1 and December 25. As the exact times can change slightly depending on the season, we recommend checking parcocolosseo.it before your visit.
Season tip: April-June and September-October are considered ideal: pleasant temperatures, less heat than in midsummer. July and August are the busiest months with the longest waiting times.
Be sure to buy tickets in advance
The Colosseum is one of the most visited sights in the world. If you arrive without a ticket, you can expect to wait 2 to 3 hours in front of the ticket office during peak season - and run the risk of time slots already being fully booked. With an online ticket, there is almost no queue at the ticket office.
Recommendation: Book your ticket 2-3 months in advance if you are traveling in the high season (April-October). Outside the high season, booking a few days in advance is often sufficient. Third-party providers such as Tiqets and GetYourGuide have their own contingents if the official website is sold out.
All tickets are personalized - the names of all visitors must be stated when booking. You should therefore bring a valid identity card or passport with you. There is a fixed time slot for the Colosseum itself; you can visit the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill flexibly within 24 hours.
Directions & location of the Colosseum
The Colosseum is located in Piazza del Colosseo, 1 in the heart of Rome. The entrance is at Sperone Valadier, near the Arch of Constantine. Arriving by public transport is clearly recommended - the city center is an environmental zone (ZTL), so drivers face high fines.
Time planning: How much time should I allow?
The Colosseum includes an entire archaeological park with the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. If you want to explore everything at your leisure, you should plan a full day.
There are no restaurants or cafés in the Colosseum. Small snacks and water in plastic bottles are permitted - drinking fountains are located outside the grounds. The restaurants around the Piazza del Colosseo are recommended for a break.
What is allowed - what is forbidden?
There is a security check at the entrance. Being well prepared saves time and avoids surprises.
Important: As all tickets are issued in your name, a valid photo ID is required. This must match the name on the ticket. Name changes after booking are not possible.
Discounts & free admission
Discounted or free tickets are available for various visitor groups on the official website. These discounts require a valid ID and are only available via the official website.

Accessibility in the Colosseum
The Colosseum is designed to be barrier-free, even if the ancient site naturally imposes some restrictions.
- Elevator available between the 1st and 2nd floor of the Colosseum
- All main entrances are wheelchair accessible
- Wheelchairs are available on site: 3 on the 1st floor at the security office, 5 more at the main entrances to the Forum Romanum
- Parts of the terrain (Palatine Hill, ancient cobbled paths) are uneven - sturdy shoes are recommended
- Accompanying persons of people with disabilities often receive free or reduced admission at the official ticket office
