Colosseum: Guided tours & tickets 2026

A guided tour turns the Colosseum into a completely different experience - with a guide, history, architecture and gladiator fights are revealed in a way that remains hidden during a self-guided visit. Here you will find all guided tour options with price comparison.

💡
Guided tour vs. self-guided tour

Why is a guided tour worthwhile?

The Colosseum is one of the most complex ancient buildings in the world. What visitors see on their own - tiers, arches, exhibitions - is only a fraction of what lies behind it. A guide explains the history of the gladiators, the engineering skills of the Romans and the political significance of the games in a way that information boards cannot.

🏛
Historical context
What was built where, why and for whom? A guide explains the function, hierarchy and history of each area.
🔑
Access to restricted areas
The arena floor and underground are only accessible with special tickets or as part of a guided tour.
👥
Small groups
Most tours are limited to 10-25 people. More personal experience, less crowds.
Time efficiency
No searching, no guesswork. A guide takes you directly to the highlights - ideal if you have limited time in Rome.

A guided tour is highly recommended, especially for first-time visitors to the Colosseum. If you already know the Colosseum and are planning a second visit, an audio guide is often a good option.

Before the visit

Practical tips for your guided tour

  • Book early: Guided tours - especially with arena or underground access - are booked up quickly in the high season. Booking 2-3 months in advance is recommended.
  • Arrive at the meeting point 30 minutes before the tour starts: the meeting point is usually near the Colosseo metro station or at the Roman Forum. Exact details after booking.
  • Please bring your identity card or passport: All tickets are issued in your name and will be checked at the entrance.
  • No large bags: Maximum 30 × 40 × 15 cm. There is no luggage storage on site - leave your suitcases at the hotel.
  • Comfortable shoes: The terrain is uneven, tours last 2.5-3 hours and involve a lot of walking.
  • Bring water with you: The area is very hot, especially in summer. Drinking water in plastic bottles is permitted.
  • Children: Admission is free for under 18s - but a ticket (free ticket) must also be provided for them when booking.

Frequently asked questions

Colosseum guided tour - your questions answered

Yes, admission to the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill is included in the price for all three tour options. You do not need to buy a separate ticket.
The tour with arena access (Colosseum incl. arena) is the best choice for most first-time visitors: it includes a guided tour of the Colosseum, the view from the arena and all three sites in one tour. The price-performance ratio is excellent. Those who already know the Colosseum or want to immerse themselves in history will prefer the all-access tour with underground.
No. The hypogeum (basement) of the Colosseum is only accessible as part of an official guided tour. The Full Experience ticket on the official website includes a compulsory guided tour of the underground. The underground area can only be booked through third-party providers via corresponding guided tours.
The classic tour lasts approx. 150 minutes (2.5 hours). Tours with arena or underground access last 150 to 180 minutes. In addition, there is time for independent exploration of the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, which are not part of the guided tour - you should therefore plan a full day for the entire archaeological park.
This depends on the tour you choose. The classic tour has groups of up to 25 people. The arena tour is limited to smaller groups. The all-access tour with underground is conducted in very small groups, as the underground area is limited in space. For an even more personalized experience, private tours are also available for individual tour groups.
In the high season (April to October), we recommend booking 2 to 3 months in advance. The all-access tour with underground and guided tours with arena access in particular sell out quickly. In the low season, booking a few weeks in advance is often sufficient. Availability changes daily - if you have a specific date in mind, you shouldn't wait too long.
