What can you see in the Roman Forum?

The Roman Forum was the political, religious and economic center of the Roman Empire for almost a thousand years. Today it is one of the most important excavation sites in the world - an open-air museum right next to the Colosseum. An audio guide is particularly worthwhile here, as many of the ruins are difficult to understand without an explanation.

Temple of Vesta
One of the oldest shrines in Rome, guardian of the eternal fire
🏆
Titus arch
Oldest surviving triumphal arch in Rome (81 AD), south side entrance
🏛
Temple of Saturn
One of the oldest buildings in the Forum, impressive row of columns
🗿
Rostra (speaker's platform)
Caesar and Cicero gave their famous speeches here
🏟
Basilica Aemilia
Former trading exchange, one of the most magnificent basilicas of antiquity
👑
Triumphal Arch of Septimius Severus
Monumental arch at the northern end of the Via Sacra
💡

The Palatine Hill (also included in the ticket) offers the best panoramic view of the entire Roman Forum. Many visitors recommend exploring the Forum first and then climbing the Palatine Hill.

🗓
Planning

Timing: schedule of a visit day

As the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill can be flexibly combined with the Colosseum ticket, there are various sensible sequences. Most frequently recommended: first the Colosseum in the booked timeslot, followed directly by the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.

1
Colosseum at the booked time slot (75-90 min.)
Allow 15-30 minutes before the timeslot for the security check. Have your personalized ticket and ID ready.
2
Roman Forum (1.5-2 hours)
Two entrances: main entrance Via di San Gregorio (next to the Colosseum) or side entrance Via della Salara Vecchia. Scan the same ticket at the entrance. Audio guide available on site or via app.
3
Palatine Hill (1-1.5 hours)
Directly accessible from the Forum. Imperial palaces, Domus Augustana and the best panoramic view of the Forum. Belongs to the same area - no new entrance.

The entire terrain is uneven and not covered. Sturdy footwear, sufficient water and sun protection are important in the summer months. There are drinking fountains on the site.
