What can you see in the Roman Forum?
The Roman Forum was the political, religious and economic center of the Roman Empire for almost a thousand years. Today it is one of the most important excavation sites in the world - an open-air museum right next to the Colosseum. An audio guide is particularly worthwhile here, as many of the ruins are difficult to understand without an explanation.
The Palatine Hill (also included in the ticket) offers the best panoramic view of the entire Roman Forum. Many visitors recommend exploring the Forum first and then climbing the Palatine Hill.
Timing: schedule of a visit day
As the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill can be flexibly combined with the Colosseum ticket, there are various sensible sequences. Most frequently recommended: first the Colosseum in the booked timeslot, followed directly by the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.
The entire terrain is uneven and not covered. Sturdy footwear, sufficient water and sun protection are important in the summer months. There are drinking fountains on the site.
When is the Roman Forum open?
The Roman Forum has the same opening hours as the Colosseum - daily from 9:00 am (the Colosseum opens 30 minutes earlier at 8:30 am). The closing time depends on the time of year and sunset. The Forum is only closed on January 1 and December 25.
| Period | Opening | Closure | Last admission |
|---|---|---|---|
| March | 9:00 a.m. | 5:30 pm | 4:30 pm |
| April - September | 9:00 a.m. | 7:15 pm | 6:15 pm |
| october | 9:00 a.m. | 6:30 pm | 5:30 pm |
| November - February | 9:00 a.m. | 4:30 pm | 3:30 pm |
When is the Roman Forum free of charge?
The Roman Forum takes part in the same free days as the Colosseum - as it is the same archaeological park. On these days, all three sites (Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill) can be visited free of charge.
Free admission on these days
Tickets must be collected on site at the ticket office (Piazza del Colosseo or Via dei Fori Imperiali) - no online booking possible. Expect considerably longer waiting times. Access to the arena and the underground of the Colosseum is not possible on free days.
